George Herman “Babe” Ruth (1895-1948) is synonymous with baseball. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1936, Ruth put up some monster numbers during his 22 seasons in the big leagues – a .342 lifetime batting average, 2,873 hits, 714 home runs and 2,217 RBI’s.
Here are ten MVP items from the vaunted “Sultan of Swat” spanning various collectible categories. Warning: they are expensive, with some artifacts valued at nearly one million dollars.
1. Babe Ruth 1914 Baltimore News Rookie Card
The Bambino’s so-called “rookie card” comes from the 1914 set issued by the Baltimore News showcasing players from the Baltimore Terrapins and the Baltimore Orioles. Produced in both red-and-white and blue-and-white versions, the card’s back features a schedule for home/away games and the legend “Compliments of Baltimore International League.”
One graded blue-and-white example in PSA 2 good condition sold at Robert Edward Auctions for 9,750. For those who can’t afford the original, a blank back reprint card was produced in 1993.
2. Babe Ruth 1926-29 Game-Used Bat
The Babe swung a mean bat, particularly during his heyday of the 1920s. An authentic game-used Babe Ruth Louisville Slugger from the 1926-29 era – one into which the Bambino carved 11 notches signifying 11 home runs – fetched 5,628 at Grey Flannel Auctions.
3. Babe Ruth Called-Shot Baseball Jersey
As the legend goes (backed somewhat by a grainy film), the Babe reportedly pointed to the center-field bleachers at Wrigley Field during the 1932 World Series, indicating that he would deliver the next pitch there. Ruth did just that, slugging a home run and spawning one of the most debated moments in baseball history.
The New York Yankees jersey Ruth was wearing on that historic day was first sold at a private sale in 1991 for 0,000. When it came up for sale at Grey Flannel Auctions in 2005, the famous “called-shot” jersey brought a top bid of 0,000.
4. Babe Ruth 1919 World Series Curse Contract
Babe Ruth was sold by the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees in 1919. Many have speculated that this harebrained move spawned the infamous “The Curse of the Bambino,” whereby Boston was prevented from winning the World Series until the Red Sox finally broke the hex in 2004.
The original five-page contract sending Ruth to the Yankees sold at Sotheby’s and Sports Cards Plus Auctions for 6,000. Actor Charlie Sheen reportedly now owns this prime piece of sports memorabilia.
5. Babe Ruth Signed Sweet Spot Baseball
Babe Ruth signed a number of baseballs during his lifetime. There also exist quite a few Ruth secretarials and outright forgeries, so be careful.
Well-heeled collectors prefer balls signed by Ruth on the so-called “sweet spot” – that virgin area located between the descending and ascending red stitches. One such authenticated ball graded PSA near mint-mint+ 8.5 (out of 10) sold at Heritage Auction Galleries for ,787.50.
6. Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig Autographed Photo
Photos signed by Babe Ruth are always a hit with collectors. But when one can find a photo signed by both Ruth and fellow Yankee great Lou Gehrig (1903-1941), then there’s cause for celebration.
A July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig Day photo signed by Babe Ruth and Gehrig sold at Robert Edward Auctions for ,750.
7. Babe Ruth 1914 St. Mary’s Industrial School Yearbook
Celebrity high school yearbooks are big with collectors. Babe Ruth attended St. Mary’s Industrial School in Baltimore which, admittedly, was more a combination orphanage/reform school than a high school.
Babe Ruth’s 1914 “senior” yearbook – officially titled Forty-Sixth Annual Report St. Mary’s School For Boys and Thirty-Sixth Annual Report St. James’ Home Baltimore Maryland 1914 – fetched ,400 at Sotheby’s and Sports Cards Plus Auctions.
8. Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig 1928 The Sporting News Counter Display
Babe Ruth plugged a number of products during his lifetime. In 1928, the St. Louis-based The Sporting News used both Ruth and Lou Gehrig to promote their popular weekly publication. A stunning, previously unknown color die-cut advertising counter display featuring the Yankee duo brought ,000 at a Robert Edward Auctions.
9. Babe Ruth 1927 Babe Comes Home Movie Poster
In 1927, the Babe portrayed ballplayer Babe Dugan opposite Swedish beauty Anna Q. Nilsson in First National Pictures’ silent comedy-drama Babe Comes Home. The movie, unfortunately, is lost forever, with no copies known to exist.
To date only two original 27×41-inch one sheet Babe Comes Home movie posters have surfaced. One example – linen-backed for preservation purposes – sold for 8,000 at Heritage Auction Galleries.
10. Babe Ruth 1947 Signed The Babe Ruth Story Book Contract
On June 18, 1947, Babe Ruth and author Bob Considine inked a contract with publisher E.P. Dutton & Sons to write a book called The Babe Ruth Story. Royalty payments would be split 75-25, with Ruth getting the larger share as well as all radio, television and motion picture rights. The subsequent book was later published in April 1948.
The original Ruth/Considine four-page book contract – signed by the Babe as “George H. Ruth” – brought a top bid of ,187.50 at Robert Edward Auctions.

Our Musicfest NW insider, Ben Meyercord got to spend the day downtown with Bo Kwon, the owner of Koi Fusion. Koi has been around for a few years now, establishing themselves as one of the first food trucks in Portland. With their delectable mashup of Korean meats and tacos, Oregonians follow them all over the city to get their hands on this grub. Can you name me some weird or strange sports? Basketball, soccer, baseball, football, hockey and a number of other games played are what typically come to mind when someone is talking about sports. All of the sports mentioned above are the common ones in today’s society but they are not the only ones played. In fact, over the past two decades or so, there have been a greater and greater number of sports that are played that can be classified as not normal or even strange. Below I have listed some of the more competitive ones that do not fit into the “normal” concept of sports. Enjoy the list and who knows, maybe you can be the next champion of one of these crazy sports.
1.) Cricket Spitting– Bug Bowl Festival in April played annually at Purdue University. Object is simple: Whoever can spit totally intact a dead cricket wins the competition. If any part of the cricket breaks off then that spit is disqualified. Thousands of people compete in this annually.
2.) Underwater Hockey– Played throughout the United States. Final Tournament’s site is determined each year and varies in location Game has same concept of regular hockey but puck remains on the pool bottom. Each player wears fins, masks, snorkels, gloves and helmets. The average player can stay underwater for 20-30 seconds before having to come up for air. Timing is the key to winning this game as you do not want your entire team to be surfacing at the same time which would give the opposing team a clear path to the goalie. Every year there is a tournament with one team winning the title. A total of 26 teams were in the tourney in 2008 but the number of teams continue to grow every year.
3.) Man vs. Horse Marathon — Run in Wales in June of every year. The race is basically what the name says. Competitors race horses for a total of 26 miles. The race was actually started by a bet at a local bar 30 years ago and has been raced ever since. I did some research and could find only one person who actually won the race and beat all of the horses out of the 30 years that the event has occurred.
4.) Real Ale Wobble — Also run in Wales. This is a very hard 35 mile mountain bike race. What sets this race apart is the beverage at the checkpoints though. Instead of water, there are cups of beer at each checkpoint of which there are three spread throughout the race course. The beer is not mandatory to drink either but if consumed, racers are limited to a total of 1.5 quarts for the entire race.
5.) Toe Wrestling– Tournament in Derbyshire, England held annually. Similar to arm wrestling but object is to force the big toe down and then in turn bringing down the leg. Rules are that both players are sitting but have their left foot suspended in mid-air where they lock together with their opponent. Once play starts, each player must remain sitting and their butt must remain on the floor otherwise they will be disqualified. If a player wants to surrender during the match, they can call out “Toe Much”.
6.) Human Tower Building– Competition in Barcelona, Spain each September. Object is to have the highest tower by “stacking” one person on top of another. It is very similar to what is seen in cheer leading but some competitors are able to get to 9 people high. As if that was not dangerous enough, once the team decides that they can go no higher then a small child is supposed to climb to the top to complete the tower. Numerous accidents occur annually and numerous ambulances are on standby for this competition.

You have done your research and finally purchased a new home gym system and can’t wait to work out! You may have already tried it while putting it all together with a kid’s enthusiasm. Congratulations! You are on a health journey towards a healthier and leaner you.
You can make your home gym much more effective by using the correct accessories to go with the equipment in your home gym. If you are wondering what accessories is this article talking about – it is not a pair of shades or new shoes! After all, you are working alone and at home, you do not have to spend on personal accessories.
What I am referring to is accessories that better your exercise routine. A heart rate or cardiac monitor for one will help you determine whether you have reached your desired heart rate while exercising. Some equipment like treadmills already have an included monitor so it is not necessary to buy an independent one. If you did not get one with the fitness equipment, it is recommended to get a heart monitor to make checking your heart rate. Much easier than checking your pulse and counting heart beats against a ticking clock and continuing to exercise!
If you have picked up a treadmill for your home gym, you may also want to pick up a pedometer. Some treadmills come with this option where it measures if you have walked or run equaling a mile in distance. Also if you have a treadmill you may want to pick up one of those pedometers. Some treadmills come with this simple measure to help you figure if you’ve run or walked the equivalent of a mile or not. If you do not have it pre-installed, you could check your mileage with the number of footfalls that the pedometer counts. Approximately 2000 footsteps make a mile depending on the length of your stride.

So often people go to either their regular gym or perhaps a center of fitness regularly only to become frustrated as a group of newbie’s get together to compare notes and chat while holding up a piece of equipment you or others are waiting to use. There may be a person standing so as you can not use the equipment you need to use and doing very little in the way of any exercise.
This can lead to stress and resentment and it seems to happen most often in specific months following a heavy eating spree during the Autumn and Winter holiday season when these people who do not come to the gym regularly take over in an effort to lose the accumulated weight they have gained in the last few months. They have a tendency to leave equipment lying around so those of us doing bodybuilding cannot find it in the regular place where it should be. These problems eventually cause tempers to become short and explode into what is known as Rage. To help you through this stressful time have a look at and follow some of the hints below:
Old hands at the gym along with the gym’s employees know that the good intentions of these people do not usually last long and by early spring they are usually gone home to stay. Below are some helpful hints to get you through this time of stress.
Stay to the rear of the aerobics group when first starting your exercises, most of the regulars will be in front.
Since there are any number of people who can sign up as members to a gym during the few months following Christmas to early Spring it is going to be crowded. Most likely the time before work or after work will be the worst so anticipate this and either go earlier than usual or later in the evening or do your workout program later at night.
Out of courtesy keep your cell phone turned off while you are at the gym. Talking on your cell phone while doing your workout program will only tie things up for others which will naturally cause problems.
Do not stay on a favorite machine to long, be aware of time limitations on the machines that you choose to use and try and stick to them. One of the most common annoyances is to have an individual hog a popular machine. Do your exercise and give someone else a chance.
As a courtesy you can wipe off the machine after you use it.
If you use any of the weights make sure they are put back in their proper place and do not throw them around making a racket. Show some respect for the equipment you are using and some courtesy to the other people using the gym.
Do not keep bothering people working on a machine because you want to use it. Some people will stay on it longer for that reason. Show patience it pays off and do not interrupt people while they are lifting weights, especially heavy ones. Wait until they are finished.
The gym is not a social gathering do you’re talking in an appropriate place.
Do not leave your personal items lying all over the place. Try and leave the area where you have done your workout clean. Do not hog space, leave people get to the equipment they need to use. Read the code of conduct in the gym and follow it.
Never take over the water fountain it is for everyone.

Are you a sport fan and wish you could wear your professional sports jerseys everywhere? Of course, you know this is not possible, but it doesn’t stop you from dreaming and it may make you wonder just what it the proper places to where your sports jerseys. After all, you certainly do not have the jersey to only where to sporting events, so then what is the proper etiquette of where and when to wear your jersey?
First off, kids and retirees seem to be the ones that can wear their professional sports jerseys anywhere they wish, as it seems “cute” to society that children and seniors are such sports fans, but to everyone else, male and female, there are times when you simply should not where your sports jerseys, such as to your board meeting, for example. Moreover, you probably would not want to wear it to a job interview. There are just some places where sports memorabilia have no place.
So then, where can you wear it? After all, you are very proud of it and you want others to see it, not just hang it in your closet. Of course, where professional sports jerseys are always welcomed and admired is at actual sporting events, which can be at an actual sporting game or just watching a game on a Sunday afternoon at your friend’s house. Of course, this is dependent on the sporting jersey you are wearing. For instance, if you are invited to a sporting event to watch a game and no everyone is for the opposite team and you show up in professional sports jerseys for the opposing team, you might not get a lot of love.
Therefore, the reason you should ever wear your sports jersey is to support your favorite team, not try to stand out in a crowd that you know full well is not for the team you are sporting around. On the other hand, you do have a right to let everyone know who you are for and in some instances and gatherings, this can be fun. You might even begin placing bets with other members in the group on who will win the game, which adds to the fun of entire situation.
The point is, always assess the situation before you show up in your professional sports jerseys, yes, you love the team, but not everyone does, so therefore, be sensitive to those that may take offense or think you are wearing it in bad taste. You want to support your team, but do so in a way that is actually supportive and not controversial or purposely trying to make a stand for your team when you know the feelings of the group you are going to be a part of for the day. It is no different from being invited to a Republican party and showing up wearing supportive gear for the Democrat, it just is bad taste. When you are invited to a sporting event, think about those that will be present before you put on that sports jersey.
